Frequently Asked Questions About Generators

We’ve compiled a list of the most common questions we get about generators so you can learn more about this helpful appliance.

How does a standby generator work?

Standby generators turn on and off automatically in response to loss of power. They do this by monitoring the voltage that comes into your household from your utility line. The power will then come from the generator instead of the utility line with the outage thanks to the automatic transfer switch. You won’t even have to wait a minute to get your power back on. When power in the utility line is detected again, your generator will switch back to the main power source without you having to do anything.

When a generator isn’t working in a power outage, it is considered to be in “standby mode”. During this time, your generator will still “exercise”, which means it will turn on even though there is no loss of power. This is in order to make sure your generator is working properly and is lubricated adequately.

How long does generator installation take to complete?

The timeline of generator installation encompasses more than just the actual placement of the generator within your building. It also includes how long it takes permits to be approved by the city and even your HOA. There may even be inspections required before installation can be completed. We recommend that you expect about 90 days from when you sign your contract until your generator is fully operational.

Does someone have to be home during the generator installation?

Yes, in general, someone will need to be home during the installation in order to allow the technicians access to the property or answer any questions. You may not need to be home the entire time, but it depends on your case. When your technician arrives, you can discuss with them if and for how long you’ll need to stick around.

Will the power go out during installation?

The power will likely go out for a short amount of time, but not always. However, if it does need to go out, your power will be back on before our team leaves your property. You likely will not experience a loss of power longer than four hours during the process.

How do I choose the size of my generator?

Our expert team will work with you to discuss your power needs and the size of your building in order to help you choose the right size generator for your home or business.

Will everything in my house be powered simultaneously?

Some options of generators will power everything in your house at once. This isn’t the only option, however. You can choose a whole house generator to power everything or a smaller select circuit generator that only powers the highest priority circuits and appliances. It all depends on your needs and your budget.

What does a transfer switch do?

A transfer switch is how your generator safely changes your building’s source of power from the utility line to its backup generator power and vice versa.

Do generators make a lot of noise?

Some generators make more noise than others, but, in general, generators make less noise than the average vacuum cleaner.

What brands of generators do you provide?

We provide Generac generators.

Do generators use a lot of fuel?

Generator fuel consumption depends on how often the generator is used and what type of fuel is powering the generator. You can choose between natural gas, propane, and diesel. Each has their own level of fuel efficiency.

Am I able to finance my generator?

Yes, we work with financing partners to help you break up your generator service cost into smaller installments.

What is the expected lifespan of a whole house standby generator?

A standby generator in Nashville, TN can last up to 30,000 hours, which can be around 20-40 years depending on how often it is used and how well it is maintained.

How do you decide where to install a generator?

Each generator manufacturer has guidelines about where their generators should be placed and what clearances are necessary. You need to follow these guidelines to stay in accordance with local regulations.
